Talking About War and the Paranormal

Angels in the Trenches on the Radio

Angels in the Trenches author Leo Ruickbie spoke to Dave Shrader on syndicated US radio show Midnight in the Desert for Veterans’ Day 2019.

Dr Ruickbie talked about the inspiration behind writing Angels in the Trenches: Spiritualism, Superstition and the Supernatural During the First World War and highlighted some of the key stories in the book, including the Angels of Mons, Raymond Lodge, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a case of remote viewing (before the US military invented the term).

He ended by talking about some of the lessons to be learned from the belief in the paranormal during the First World War, particularly the importance of lucky charms in extreme conditions and their psychological effect.

The show was broadcast live on 23:00 to 00:00 Pacific Time on 11 November 2019 and available via the show’s archives, see
